7 Funny Little Things That Distant Assistants Do

7 Funny Little Things That Distant Assistants Do

Distant assistants can be your greatest allies when it comes to scaling your business. You may browse through their completed projects, find their time trackers running during work hours, or have a video call with them via Skype—they can be with you each step of the way. But, what do they do behind the scenes? Here are 7 funny little things that Distant assistants do.

1. Dress Up for a Meeting

Communicating with clients never goes out of the scene in the life of a regular DA. Sometimes they do a video conference, and at other times they simply have chats or short calls via Skype. There are a number of tools that can be used for communication.

What excites many Distant assistants the most are the video meetings they have with their respective clients.

Michelle Calma once shared how she enjoys it very much. According to her, it gives her a reason to put on makeup. It’s something that allows her to break away from everyday tasks.

We recently asked her about it.

She would put on a red lipstick and wear a formal top. So every time she attends a meeting, she fires up for a “makeover”. But…

Here’s the thing…

With a formal top and red lipstick, nothing beats pajamas for the lower half. Add to it a good pair of homey slippers. A perfect outfit for a getaway from home.

At other times, tattered shorts would do well as an alternative to PJs. Apparently, comfort is simply one of the perks she has as a Distant assistant. She can wear anything she wants—no dress codes.

As she gets used to the meetings, however, she slowly turned away from red lipstick and formal tops and stepped into wearing sleeveless tanks. She has grown rather more convenient spending time with her clients. Meetings have become similar to chatting with a next-door neighbor or a longtime friend.

2. Bouncer Blues

Having spent a lot of years in the industry already, Michelle shares more of her funny moments. Among those she couldn’t forget was the time she was just nursing her baby.

She usually placed him in a bouncer beside her, and made sure to check on him from time to time. Working and nursing at the same time was no easy feat.

Sometimes her baby would cry while she’s on a call with a client. To stop him from continuing with the ruckus, she would kick the bouncer just enough for it to bounce a little and calm the baby.

Brutal? She begs to disagree. To be clear, it was not a Karate move or an axe kick. It was just a classic solution for the need of the moment.

Michelle just could not help but laugh remembering those times. Baby sure had a tough but loving mom!

3. Up for a Snack

The alarm rings, you take a shower, eat breakfast, and start working. But after few hours of sitting in front of the computer, you hear your stomach grumble and plead for food. It’s the exact same scenario that few Distant assistants have.

These passionate workers dash on to their tasks with clear goals of which projects to complete. Their days sometimes even become haywire as they hustle between priorities within and outside of work.

Working on straight hours may not be too much on their shoulders. But it typically leaves them wanting for food even shortly after huge meals.

Having the fridge nearby is one advantage they have from working at home. What you probably didn’t know is many of them love food. Not a day ends without some snacks at the side.

Sometimes they secretly eat in meetings, hiding their food away from the camera. Others would go as far as not showing their faces on the screen, and just settle with audio conferences with the client. Food exists to be enjoyed, some may reason out.

Yet in all those sneaky moments, they still pay close attention to the meeting. Being available to the client still comes as a priority.

4. Something’s Burning

A number of moms thrive as Distant assistants. They do the best they could in every task. Even with house chores at the side, they still succeed in their chosen career paths.

At times, however, they could not help but find themselves having a hard time juggling between priorities at work and home.

Among the challenges, as one Distant assistant shared, is having a perfectly cooked meal. She sometimes finds herself so wrapped up with work that she tends to forget the food she is cooking. Consequently, she had to settle with either burnt meat or overcooked food.

Single DAs may also find themselves in the same situation. The thing is…the things that Distant assistants do at work require their attention. But it does not necessarily mean that the things they do in other areas of their lives do not matter at all.

What they can do is come up with a schedule that works well with them, specifying in-between breaks and making the most out of their time.

5. Struggle with Hair

Among the things that Distant assistants do, forgetting to comb one’s hair is simply unbelievable…at least to a couple of people we’ve met.

Here’s the case:

The Distant assistant takes a bath in the morning, thinks about letting her hair to dry for awhile, the night then slowly comes but she still hasn’t combed her hair. As some would put it, hair means glory. But the DA did not intend it to happen.

According to one Distant assistant, she simply forgot about it as the hours passed.

7 Funny Little Things That Virtual Assistants Do

She became so wrapped up with work and the joy that came with it. While she acknowledges the significance of health and proper grooming, there are times when she just could not help but have her mind completely set on fulfilling her projects.

But there is no need to worry, she said. Forgetting is simply a state of the mind, and such cases don’t happen every day.

6. Jack-of-All-Trade

Working with passionate individuals is a sure treat. They never fail to come up with new ideas that turn on creativity and encourage others. Their passion for what they do keeps them going forward to success.

Distant assistants likewise sometimes find themselves working for passionate clients. What typically happens, however, is the DAs end up fulfilling other jobs apart from what they’ve applied for.

Someone shared that among the things that Distant assistants do, multi-tasking is probably the most challenging yet exciting one. A DA could further think, “The only thing that I haven’t done so far is doing a somersault.”

Nonetheless, the distant assistant loves what he does and couldn’t ask for a better client.

7. Music is Heart

A number of Distant assistants enjoy listening to music during work. It sparks up their energy and gets them going for the day.

They usually tune in with their headsets. What happens, however, is they tend to get the vibes and enjoy singing along. Little did they know that their voices were already too loud.

People close by would often ask them to lower down their voice. Sometimes they sound pretty much disturbing. According to their listeners, a golden voice might have saved them.

Final Thoughts

There is humor in the little things that Distant assistants do. What may appear as struggles only showcase the DA’s ingenuity. Things that are out of the ordinary—little things that pushed them beyond what they thought they were capable of—sparks like to the sometimes monotonous life.

Even with all the tasks they have, they still get to bond with their family and friends. They are sincerely thankful for the flexibility they have in living out life.

What an awesome business! Finally, a way to hire the RIGHT person for my administrative tasks and they are remote! No office space to consider, W2's, 1099's or payroll. Jaime and his team of remote workers are top-notch! I hired my first assistant in May. I recently suffered a motorcycle accident and it left me unable to work for 2 weeks. But my assistant stepped right in to guide our CEO on all matters financial. It’s so nice to have that stress eliminated from my life!
