Delegation’s Biggest Barriers

Delegation’s Biggest Barriers

To be successful, entrepreneurs, managers and leaders must be able to delegate.  It’s hard to do and delegation’s biggest barriers are oftentimes individual perceptions and fears.  These perceptions can seem very real but if you can identify them, you can overcome them.

Give up Time to Free Up Time

As an entrepreneur, it’s important to dedicate your time and resources to promoting and growing your business. Make a list of the tasks you do throughout the day and how much time is dedicated to each. If you spend a significant amount of time on clerical tasks like bookkeeping, sending emails and setting appointments, you could benefit from delegating those tasks.

A professional assistant can whiz through those tasks freeing you up to network, sell and market your business. Take the time to train a new hire thoroughly. A little time spent in the beginning will give you big rewards in the future.

Are You a Control Freak?

Your job is to manage and run your business, not to do everyone’s job. Let go of your perception that if you want the job done right, you must do it. You probably can do some things better yourself, but you cannot do it all by yourself.  If you have a good communication system in place you should be able to maintain a sense of control without micromanaging. You might also benefit from new perspectives and discover a more effective way of doing things.

It’s Hard to Delegate What You Like to Do

Successful entrepreneurs are passionate about what they do. If you are web developer, you started your business because that’s what you really love to do. Now that your business is growing you can’t do it all yourself but you’re reluctant to give up the task you love doing the most. Is continuing to stay up until the wee hours of the morning finishing a new site an effective use of your time? Probably not.

Don’t think of delegation as a way to shuffle off tasks you simply don’t want to do. Think of it as a way to alleviate stress and regain control of your future. You and your company will benefit with more time to plan and organize, more personal time, more creativity and increased motivation.

About Jaime Jay

Meet Jaime Jay – a man who wears many hats, and wears them all admirably. He’s a master connector, an entrepreneur extraordinaire, and a published author who knows how to get things done.

Before he found his way to the business world, Jaime served his country as a brave paratrooper in the U.S. Army. But that’s just the beginning of his many accomplishments.

He’s the founder of the renowned Bottleneck Distant Assistant Services firm, and his book “Quit Repeating Yourself” has become a must-read for entrepreneurs everywhere.

When he’s not busy building his empire, you can find him on his beloved Harley Davidson, cruising through the countryside and taking in the invigorating effects of Uitwaaien – a Dutch practice that involves facing the wind to boost health and relieve stress. He enjoys spending his free time outside building stuff with his wife, Nikita the dog and their two kittens (for now at least) Tommy and Tater. He is ‘over-the-moon’ happily married to his wonderful wife Sara, his amazing daughter, Jessica, who is serving our country as a United States Army soldier. Jaime and Sara are the proud grand parents of two beautiful little girls.
