DA Story: Paolo Gallardo Pursuing Excellence in Web Development
Behind every website is a web developer who works countless hours on building and maintaining it. Ever wondered what their lives look like? This week, we’re featuring one of the passionate individuals in the field. Here’s DA Story: Paolo Gallardo Pursuing Excellence in Web Development.
“‘Nothing is perfect’ is not an excuse not to pursue it.” – Anon
Start of a Career Online
Paolo started working online as a freelancer last May 2016. He has always been a web developer throughout his career. And just like many other distant assistants, he applied through a number of different job portals.
The competition was tough and the market was already saturated with a lot of aspiring applicants. But those challenges did not wane his passion in the field.
Now, Paolo is happily working full time at Slapshot Studio. His responsibilities include maintaining quality websites, providing website solutions, and creating quality websites. In all those, he does his best to produce nothing less than the best quality of results he could offer.
Into Web Development
The field of programming has different branches. Among them are systems and software development, game development, and web development. Paolo loved systems and software development. It’s what he used to work on during college.
When he decided to start his career online, he thought web development would be a lot easier. But he was mistaken. It required the same passion, commitment, and diligence.
He worked for a total of five different companies before landing a full-time position.
“The IT industry is booming.” – Paolo Gallardo
The constant rise of new technology offers more opportunities for businesses. But according to Paolo, the changes are coming fast, thus making it more challenging for web developers to adapt and be flexible.
He sees good potential in artificial intelligence. Chatbots, for example, will become more convenient for people to converse with in searching for a solution from a business. He shared that there could come a time when customers would simply engage with chatbots through voice and they will immediately see the page or the solution they need.
To prepare for the good things, he trains himself regularly and does his best to improve his skills.
Challenges and Perks of Being a Distant Assistant
When asked about his distant assistant journey, Paolo replied, “So far so good.” He shared how challenging it was in the beginning.
It was not easy to look for a client and he also had a hard time paying his tax. As a self-employed individual, the company has no obligation to pay it for him. He needs to adjust his work schedule in order for him to pay on time.
“You will lose more if you don’t pay your taxes. When the government is already after you, I don’t think you would still be happy about it.” – Paolo Gallardo on the importance of paying taxes for distant assistants
There were also times when he struggled with his internet connection due to bad weather. He shared that web development, in particular, requires a fast internet connection. Otherwise, it will be difficult to work on.
But these challenges are minimal compared to the benefits he enjoys from working as a distant assistant.
On top of the list is his flexible work schedule. He gets to work at his own pace and thereby be able to spend more time with his loved ones.
Just recently, Paolo went on a vacation to California. He only took two days off and was able to carry his job with him.
Life Outside of Work
Work hard, play hard. Paolo has his own share of joys outside his career online. Often times you will find him hanging out with either his friends, girlfriend, or family.
He cherishes the moments they spend together. Playing basketball and computer games are among his favorite pastimes with them.
When he has nothing else to do, he looks for opportunities to enhance his expertise in web development.
“I want to train myself, so that I can deliver more quality to the full-time position I have right now.” – Paolo Gallardo
Paolo wants to focus on front-end development. He enjoys learning to improve his skills. His favorite resources are Awwwards, CodePen, Lynda, and Shaye Howe.
Piece of Advice to Aspiring Distant Assistants
To aspiring distant assistants, Paolo encourages you to think carefully before you apply. According to him, the market is supersaturated and you might be disappointed if you don’t get a job immediately.
A lot of people are having difficulty finding a client. Some of them have already left their jobs only to find themselves still waiting for another work opportunity to arrive.
“Before you become a distant assistant, consider it at least five times. Think before you act.” – Paolo Gallardo
What you can do is join different groups on Facebook to learn from others in the field. He observed how a lot of freelancers seem confused about what they want. They are ambivalent about which career path to take, so they jump from one online position to another.
“Stay in your craft. If you fail, pick up yourself and focus on what you’ve already started.” – Paolo Gallardo
He noticed how many college graduates are underemployed. They did not reach or even aimed to achieve their maximum potential in their respective fields.
In the long run, Paolo sees himself still working online. As he said, “It’s the future of the workforce.” Companies are able to save time and resources, and people from around the world are enjoying the benefits that online work provides.
