Paul Colligan – The Back Story
There’s a great story about this podcast that I would like to share with you before I really dive into who Paul is and what transpired during this episode. So, to start things off, I have to go back to February of 2014 in sunny San Diego. I went to an event where I was fortunate enough to speak with an expert panel in front of 300+ peers in my industry. It was a fairly nerve racking experience and if the super animated crowd of 300+ anxious event goer’s weren’t enough, I was sharing the stage with a couple people I really looked up to. I had been following them, at this point, for a couple years and have learned so much from them that I actually used what they taught me in my own business. Guess what? It works.
This takes me to my introduction to Paul Colligan. He was one of the co-hosts of the event. If you are anything like me, then you really enjoy live events. Especially if they are produced well with tons of great content and entertaining speakers. Paul is definitely an entertaining speaker. Anyone attending an event where Paul is speaking can see how much passion Paul has for his craft. Sometimes, it’s almost as if he forgets to breathe when he’s talking becuase it seems he can hardly wait to tell you about his next thought. I liken it to a child who just gets back from Disneyland and wants to tell you all about their day. Only difference? Paul is talking tech.
Without getting too far off track, I was able to meet and talk with Paul for the first time in person. It was a really cool feeling. He had been talking about “multicasting” at this particular event. Multicasting is a way in which you can create content once via video and reproduce the content multiple times by extracting the content and making a book out of it, posting blogs, pulling the audio and uploading the audio to a podcast, etc. I was particularly interested in podcasting. After I got to listen to Paul speak about the power of podcasting and how easy and fun it was, I had to get started. Now, here’s what I did next… ready? NOTHING!
There are three ways to make money with podcasting… direct, indirect and integrated. – Paul Colligan
Can you believe that? After that big build up at the event, I did nothing. What the heck is wrong with me? As you get to learn more about Paul today and in the future, you will learn that he is full of “Action”. He doesn’t just preach… he practices what he preaches. He hangs out with other action takers and that is who Paul Colligan is. A couple months later, I listened to Paul’s podcast again and I finally got off my lazy arse and got to work on my show. I never looked back since. One of the reasons I got involved in podcasting is because of Paul. I won’t ever be able to thank him for all his words of wisdom that helped motivate me to stop riding the pine and get in the game (ah, see what I mean by the title of the show now)? Thank you, Paul.

One day I was updating some social media and I saw a post that Paul wrote. He was asking what everyone’s goal was for the new year.
I responded by saying “I would like to interview Paul Colligan”
His reply was a simple one-word answer… “Done”. That was that. It was the end of the year and tons of things were happening with the holidays, but the new year couldn’t come soon enough. Paul talks about utilizing the podcasting platform so that the “little guys” or the “mom and pop outfits” can now play in the big leagues. Thought this story could resonate with you in that you really can do what you want as long as you set your mind to it and take action. I sure did and it feels good to accomplish something you set out to. I digress, let me tell you about our conversation.
Paul Colligan is a Witty Guy
Paul Colligan is a digital marketing expert, creative director, podcaster, best-selling author, YouTube expert, content creator, multicaster, public speaker and overall a really cool guy. He’s always producing content and you can see him consistently updating his social media accounts with posts geared towards interaction. He asks really good questions. The reason I mention that is because imagine being an up and coming journalist interviewing someone like Barbara Walters. Would you be a little nervous? Yes, of course… I mean, if you are human. What do you do in a situation like this? Well, suck it up and take advantage of the oppportunity I say! That’s exactly what I tried to do.
Paul Colligan helps people leverage technology to improve themselves and broaden their audience for greater profit. He is Education Czar for Traffic Geyser Inc. and CEO of Colligan.com.
His work can be seen/heard/read in Web Shows that include eMarketingVids, books that include the #1 Bestseller “Cross Channel Social Media Marketing” and publications online and off as varied as the Huffington Post and The Net Effect. He is also a popular speaker on Internet technology topics and frequently speaks online, on the air, and before audiences about his passions. He has presented at events around the world that include BlogWorld and New Media Expo, The European Business Podcasting Summit, Google Tech Talks, Mac World, Social Media Success Summit, and Microsoft Tech-Ed.
During the pre-interview I let Paul know about the format and asked if there was anything he wanted me to bring up. Paul replied back with “let’s just see where it goes”. This kind of answer would have normally thrown me off my game plan, but Paul made it easy enough to just go with it. Paul’s witty character really shines through as he pumps out tibits of information all throughout the show that anyone wanting to start a podcast or improve their position online can listen to once and implement the solution right away.
We talked a lot about Podcasting. Paul has been in the internet before the web. He has been around podcasting since it’s inception and he literally wrote the book on podcasting. Check Paul’s Amazon page out to see all his books. I would list them, but there are too many. His latest book “How to Podcast 2015” answers all the questions about creating a stellar podcast.
Paul Colligan Talks About YouTube
This is a great video of Paul talking on stage at a Brendon Brouchard Experts Academy live event. This is a great example of how Paul is and the incredible content he delivers time and time again.
Paul utilizes the mobile text call-to-action feature for several reasons and it also separates him from a lot of the competition because he has a talking point that nobody else has. He’s recieved consulting deals because people want to have the same solutions. Paul has an incredible list of followers from his podcast. His list from podcasting is full of people that knows, likes and trust him because they understand the message that Paul is sharing.
He has a fairly consistent downloads, but there are more shows that have more optins than others. An important reason why Paul uses individual optins for each of his episodes is because it helps to show him what shows resonate with more people. This is an incredible indicator to know what topics are more interesting to his audience and therefore, the need to produce similar content is identified.
