Persuasion VS Manipulation
Jaime and Aaron begin the podcast by discussing the importance of great leadership in a team. A great leader who can communicate effectively can persuade his team to fulfill their goals. Jaime points out that this is entirely different from being manipulative, and Aaron whole-heartedly agrees.
Jaime then asks Aaron what he thinks distinguish persuasion from manipulation, and provides his definitions as well.
“It really has to do with your intent. If you’re doing it for their greater good or well-being, then that’s persuasion. If you’re doing it for your own gain and hope that it remains secret, there’s no way you can call that persuasion.” – Aaron Schmookler
Spreading the Contagion of Positive Culture in the Team
Jaime brings up how important it is to have a positive culture in the team. Aaron agrees and sites the Bottleneck team as an example. He explains that he can figure out a company’s culture by the behavior of their team. Simply put, the higher-up’s attitude and the culture they propagate is reflected in the actions their team make.
“I can walk into an organization, and within a few minutes have a pretty clear understanding of its culture. I met you first, so I wasn’t surprised when I met Rechelle, Jovelyn, Glenda and the rest of your team. It’s because the attitude you reflect, your behaviors, and the way you seek to help me is reflected by your whole team.” – Aaron Schmookler
Everyone is a Leader
Aaron answers a question from the audience about how to make leadership relatable to the team. Aaron describes the most common conception of leadership is assuming a supervisorial role. This is not always the case. Simply by influencing others, you can lead people without being the de-facto leader.
Aaron’s question back to the audience is, how do they use this influence?
“So how do you make leadership relatable? You tell people that they’re leading. Leadership has more to do with leading people in directions that you’re proud of than it has to do with whether or not you’re leading them at all.” – Aaron Schmookler
