Matthew Turner is a British author who lives in a small town in Yorkshire, England. He has published numerous novels, including Beyond the Pale, a book built on interviewing hundreds of successful entrepreneurs, authors, investors, and thought-leaders.

Who is Matthew Turner?
We begin the conversation with Matthew sharing the moments right after the publishing of his last book, five years ago. Not long after, Matthew had an idea that would lay the foundations for Beyond the Pale.
“I’ve always had this ambition to bring my passion for writing both fiction and non-fiction together. And I never knew really how to do it, but I was inspired by books like The Alchemist.” – Matthew Turner
It was hard to say when it clicked, but Matthew explained that it was an organic process. It came to him little by little, and eventually he had enough to work with and expand into the book we see today.
Beyond the Pale and Hustle Culture
Matthew then talks about the premise of Beyond the Pale, in which he combined the experiences of a lot of entrepreneurs grinding and right in the middle of hustle culture, and wove it into an amazing story of a man.
“I just came up with this idea of this very successful Silicon Valley entrepreneur. On the outside, he seems to have it all: fame, fortune, good looks, and youth. But on the inside, he feels that he should be happy. And something happens in the book that he starts to really question: what am I doing? Am I really happy?” – Matthew Turner
This is something a lot of entrepreneurs find themselves in after a few years of non-stop grind and hustle. Sometimes, it becomes all about the hustle, and you forget what made you passionate about doing the things you are doing.
A Different Path
Matthew also mentions that one of the things that influenced him writing the book was when they learned that they were having a child. Having new priorities and responsibilities gave him the time to pause and think.
One of the things that he started entertaining was finding ways to work less, yet still earn a decent amount. This is important as he has other responsibilities now, and he did not want to sacrifice the time with his family just to “maximize” his time at work.
