What is SquadCast FM?
SquadCast.FM was co-founded by Zach Moreno and Rock Felder, who are our guests for today. They created SquadCast in 2017, and they were way ahead in the curve when it came to remote podcast or content production.
Before SquadCast, Zach already had some experience with podcasting. He also has a background in audio and video production, and is an accomplished software engineer.
Rock’s forte is focused on accounting and finance, as he has always been interesting in being a business person and climbing up the corporate ladder. But he also has had the ambition to be more entrepreneurial, and be on the ground level, and be his own boss.
So when Zach approached Rock about the idea of SquadCast and how they can ride the wave as podcasting was slowly coming to the mainstream, he was in. It also helped that Rock himself was an avid podcast listener, and have a few ideas on how they could help other podcasters in making their content better.
Getting into Remote Content
One of the things that was pointed out with remote content, particularly with podcasting is that at first, people only used what was readily available to them, such as Skype or Zoom, to connect to guests and record the conversation. The problem with such setups is that unlike how you can control things in a set, there are a lot of factors that could affect the quality of the recording.
“We didn’t set out to start a technology company – we set out o do a like a science fiction audio drama as a creative side project because we were big fans of podcasting and basically pivoted once we found this challenge that other podcasters had and we had ourselves. We kept doing our homework and just kept coming up empty-handed so that’s really where it gave us pause and we spotted this opportunity like, “I wonder if other people want higher quality too for podcasting.”” – Zach Moreno, SquadCast
Another thing about having well-produced content is that it adds a sense of professionalism to your podcast. It also lends a sense of consistency that the audience can expect a certain level of quality when they listen to this or that podcaster.
Delivering Quality Recordings
One of the first things that SquadCast addressed was how to secure recordings for their podcasters, and ensure that it goes out in good quality consistently.
“Along that journey, while quality was obvious to us on day one and was our primary constraint, but there’s also reliability. Like if I say, “Jaime, we’re gonna record the best sounding audio or video you’ve ever heard or seen”, but we couldn’t actually deliver the file a hundred percent of the time, that would be pretty rough.” – Zach Moreno, SquadCast
That when they learned that they have to deal with the consequences of doing things in the Web, as well as having it come from 130 different countries from different devices and software. So they had to come up with something that is compatible to all of that, and still deliver quality recordings at the end of the day.
