Who is Dan Norenberg?
Dan Norenberg has a background in Psychology and Criminology, as he wanted to be a lawyer growing up. But as he spent his years in California working with tech companies, he thought his business experience would be more helpful to those aspiring to be great leaders in their own categories.
After his experience with tech companies, primarily in sales and marketing, he also had a chance to manage other people as the company he was in grew. But when the company went out of business, he decided to take a sabbatical.
“When the company went out of business, I just said I’ve had enough. I needed a break. So I sold my house and packed everything up. I went to Europe for two weeks, just to sort of clear my head. That two weeks turned into 30 years, and here I am in Munich.” – Dan Norenberg
At first, he didn’t know what he was going to do, as he didn’t even speak the language. But with his skills and no-how, he managed to coach and be an expert in his field, and work as a consultant for different companies.
Putting Yourself Out There
As much as Dan’s story is amazing, he himself felt scared when he was starting out. As Dan said, he did not know a word of German back then, and he didn’t know anyone at first. But as Dan further shares, you really just have to put yourself out there and follow your heart, things will start happening.
Of course, Dan doesn’t credit everything to just himself. He has met a lot of wonderful people who were willing to help a guy who was just starting out in a foreign land.
“I wouldn’t be fair if I tried to take all the credit myself. Because as you know, from starting a business and working with people, so many people came out of the woodwork to help and support me, and showed me the way. To give me opportunities to show my skills and what I could do with my experience that I brought over from the United States, which were somewhat unique. So I’m really grateful to all those people and organizations that gave me a shot.” – Dan Norenberg
Training Latent Talents
Jaime asks Dan if coaching was something he had learned prior to being in Germany, or if it was something that he had learned along the way while working for Siemens as a coach for Team Development.
Dan replies that as his dad was a principal and his mother was a teacher, he has always been around education and the environment of teaching. While he did not want to be a teacher himself, some of the skills translated as he worked in his managerial role in California, and more so when he was a coach in Siemens.
“I was what you might say, a seminar junkie, going off to learn the next thing about negotiation, or selling, or strategic selling, or whatever. It was so I could bring it back and introduce it to my team. So there was always a function of learning or training in my line management role.” – Dan Norenberg
