So if you want to learn how you can approach these questions and avoid having Bottlenecks in your life, stay tuned to this episode.

Who is Dr. Andy Garrett?

Dr. Andy Garrett is a clinical psychologist, focusing more on coaching and consulting with people on how to find their identity. For Dr. Garrett, it is important that one finds their identity, as it sets their direction in life and help them find their “true north”, so to speak.

“When your direction is pointing true north (and) you know what matters most, you’re able to quickly prioritize focus on the things in life that you really care about. (It) gives your life meaning, significance that makes you feel most alive.” – Dr. Andy Garrett

Finding your true north is really important as it can explain why you behave a certain way, and what’s driving your behavior has a massive impact on where you actually end up. Knowing your true north strengths and creating a strategy to use those strengths to create a positive experience for you and the people around you is ideal.

Our Identities are Flexible

Dr. Andy Garrett shares an old belief that people have fixed personalities, and that you can’t change who you are. But research done by Dan Gilbert on personalities suggest otherwise. People tend to change over time, and you can see it when you look back and see that some of your particular tastes have changed over the years. It can happen slowly that you don’t notice it, or because you are actively trying to change something in your life.

“The people who change the most in a five-year period in a way that’s deeply gratifying is really heading in a way that is making them happy. What they have is a strategy, they know who it is that they want to become, whereas other people unfortunately are kind of allowing life to dictate circumstances.” – Dr. Andy Garrett

The issue with simply letting life take the reins is that sometimes, you feel like other people or other things are getting blown your way or even obstructing the path to your happiness. This is where being in control of your own direction helps tremendously, so you can deal with these external factors which maintaining the course to your true north.

So it is never too late to recenter and find your identity, and influence yourself to find your true north and happiness.

What is My Purpose?

Dr. Andy Garrett mentions that there are a lot of people who are really focused on their purpose in life, whether it is to achieve great things, or to make sure their loved ones live a good life. While that’s good and all, but the issue is when they do not establish a sense of identity first.

The issue lies in that when they focus all their attention to that purpose, it starts to seem like their identity is tied to it. Dr. Garrett gives an example of a hard-working client that is working to give a better life to their family. The problem is that his identity got tied into the working / making a money bit, which left him working long hours and neglecting the family. So while their cause was noble, they ended up damaging the very people that they wanted to support.

So to re-emphasize, it is important to get your identity sorted out first, in order to find out if the purpose you are aiming for aligns with your own true north.

This digital master-course is the byproduct of what Dr. Andy has learned in his 17 years of work in a private practice setting in Newport Beach, the life lessons he received from his grandfather – Carl Karcher – a successful entrepreneur and the founder of the Carl’s Jr. household brand – who modeled for him what it meant to live with an identity that was consistently pointing true north – and how to value relationships in a way that was completely transformative and that will create a meaningful legacy, and his deep understanding of the science supporting the benefits of Positive Psychology – especially as it pertains to the development of character and establishing character-based relationships.

Dr. Andy has developed a uniquely powerful, compelling, and practical description of what it really means to live with an authentic true north identity and then he provides a step by step blueprint for how to establish an identity that not only defines who you are – but that also clarifies what you do, how you do it, and why you do it – and does so in a way that then reinforces and amplifies whom you are (creating a virtuous feedback loop that grows exponentially).

Dr. Andy strives to practice what he teaches with his beautiful and beloved family – and by being an active member and contributor at his Church – and in his local community of Newport Beach, CA.
