John Murphy: What is Your Legacy?

As we live through these harsh times due to the current pandemic, many of us might have reached a point in our lives where we ask, “what kind of legacy would I leave behind?”

Join us today as we speak with John Murphy, CEO, and Founder of John Murphy International. We talk about how we, as business entities, can make a difference in people’s lives.

Challenge For Leaders

John discusses with us the new challenges the current state of our world is in. He points out the different sectors of society that are affected by these new changes and what we should look for new aspiring leaders. Leaders are now looking to create their own legacy in trying to make a difference in people’s lives.

“Now it’s a very different world that people are operating in and the challenge that leaders have is that people are looking for value-based leaders. If we look across the political world, the business world, even the religious worlds the pillars of society and leadership that were there have evaporated and people are saying that it’s very self-serving.” – John Murphy

Engagement With Your Team

John explains with us the importance of engaging with the team and not just having a transactional relationship with them. He points out the difference of ‘working on your business and working in it’ wherein leaders need to be on the trenches working with the team. This is crucial for the legacy that you’re trying to build.

“Leaders must engage and understand what success looks like for their people. It’s not just one style of leading and managing. They’ve got to adapt to the personal style it’s your job to optimize the potential of the people that you’re in charge of and really value, respect, and honor them. That is your road to growing the potential of the people.” – John Murphy

Life of Significance

John talks about the significance of what legacy you want to leave behind and to whom you want to leave it. He encourages people to ask themselves how you can make a change for those people, especially during these challenging times.

“We need to have done something with our lives that have made a difference. The people that you love, the people that you care for, the people that you’ve been entrusted within your career — what difference have you made to their lives? That’s the question we need to ask ourselves and find as a kind of the pathway for the journey that we all embrace.” – John Murphy
